Welcome to my website! As you look it over, you may be wondering about my experience and background. I taught secondary school and college in several states. Over time, a particular interest became teaching writing. Upon moving to California, I taught in a Writing Lab in a community college. I learned that I really enjoyed working with students individually, particularly when they wrote about life problems. In time and with encouragement, I began studies for a degree in Counseling Psychology with a Transpersonal Specialization at John F Kennedy University.
My internships for licensing included Head Start and elementary school students, grief groups for a hospice, and private practice. I later led coping skills and poetry therapy groups at a day treatment center for severely mentally ill individuals while continuing in private practice.
After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, I became particularly interested in training in disaster mental health. This interest led to a series of contracts working as a counselor for active duty military personnel, their families and civilian employees on bases in the U.S. and Europe. During this time, I also engaged in advanced training in couples’ therapy. Now I am participating in a certification program in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy as research indicates that it provides significant, long-lasting benefits to most couples who complete the nine stages of treatment. I also am a Certified Poetry Therapist and have studied assisting people with artist blocks and underachievement in college. These experiences enable me to assist individuals, couples and families--both civilian and military--in creating a life that allows better choices about chosen changes and those thrust upon us.
